The Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen - a design legend since 1958
The iconic Egg Chair was created by a Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the famous SAS Royal Hotel. While working on the architecture and interior of the hotel, the designer decided to fill the space with furniture of his own design.
The eggshell-shaped chairs created a sense of comfort and privacy. They were placed in the lobby and reception areas, where they immediately became the centerpiece of the interior. To this day, room 606 of the Radisson Collection Royal Hotel retains its authentic 1960s design, created by Arne Jacobsen. Among the original interior items are the Egg Chair, Swan Chair and Drop Chair in characteristic aquamarine upholstery.
Innovative production technology
When creating the Egg Chair, the designer used a technology that was innovative for its time. The basis of the chair was a one-piece plastic structure reinforced with fiberglass, on top of which a layer of furniture foam and decorative upholstery was applied.
Arne Jacobsen personally worked on the shape of the future chair: in his own garage, he sculpted prototypes from clay, achieving perfect proportions and ergonomics. The leather and textile upholstery of the chairs was made by hand, which added uniqueness to each product.
The finished structure was mounted on a metal base with a tilt adjustment mechanism, which ensured maximum comfort during use.
Fritz Hansen and the anniversary series
Today, the Egg Chair is manufactured by a Danish company Fritz Hansen, who collaborated with Arne Jacobsen since 1934.
In 2008, to celebrate the chair's 50th anniversary, a limited edition of 999 pieces was released. The anniversary models were upholstered in deep chocolate suede and leather, hand-polished bronze legs, and individually embossed with a personal number for each piece.
Denim Egg Chair — a modern interpretation
One of the modern versions of the iconic chair is the Denim Egg Chair. The model has a recognizable egg shape and is upholstered in worn denim fabric, which gives it a stylish vintage look.
The chair's upholstery is removable and has a zipper at the bottom. The cross-shaped base is made of chrome-plated stainless steel, and the removable cushion is made of foam rubber and also covered in denim.
